ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: QUENTIN COAXUM

Local Evanston Recording Jazz Artist Inspires Noyes Street!

Now On Display at Coffee Lab - Quentin's "You & I"

"You & I" marks Quentin Coaxum's second release since his debut album "Current", released in 2014. With this sophomore project, Coaxum's growth as a composer and trumpeter are on full display. Perhaps more significant is how deeply personal this recording is. With each song, Coaxum paints a picture of his own personal and mental journey through the past 5 years. As the album unfolds, each track increasingly incorporates more genres, illustrating the various places from which Coaxum draws musical influence.

"You & I" is a personal narrative, told through memorable melodies, infectious grooves, and daring improvisation. Though more adventurous than his debut release, Coaxum's musical message not only still remains on "You & I", it proves to be more potent.

More About Quentin:

Quentin Coaxum showed an affinity for music at a very young age. Upon taking up the trumpet in elementary school, he took a liking to the tapes and records left behind by his grandfather. It was these same recordings that inspired him to take an interest in jazz that would later blossom into a passion for all music. Originally growing up just outside of St. Louis, Missouri, Coaxum currently resides in Chicago, IL, where he is an active musician and educator. Quentin holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Northern Illinois University, and a Masters of Music in Jazz Studies from Northwestern University. Coaxum has since graduated and become one of Chicagoʼs brightest emerging young trumpeters.

During his time in Chicago, Coaxum has been a featured performer at The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Hyde Park Jazz Festival, and the University of Chicago’s Logan Arts Jazz Series. Coaxum’s first album as a leader, “Current”, was released on the Skiptone Music Label in 2014, and can be purchased on iTunes.

As a performer, Coaxum has garnered praise for his ability to compose and perform with modern lyricism while also displaying a knowledge of many musical traditions. His voice as a trumpeter reaches across genres in a way that captivates listeners and fellow musicians alike, and has afforded him the opportunity to perform with many world class musicians. As a performer, he has appeared with Solange Knowles, Jimmy Heath, Robin Eubanks, Victor Goines, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Dustin Laurenzi’s “Snaketime”, Jeff Swanson’s “Case-Fitter”, Christopher McBride’s “Quatuor De Force”, Stu Mindeman’s “Waking Eyes”, the Willerm Delisfort Project, and many more.

Coaxum continues to manage a full teaching schedule while maintaining a busy performance schedule throughout the midwest and abroad
